New York Paralegal Requirements & Resources
Becoming a Paralegal in New York
New York does not require paralegals to meet any specific education or training requirements. However, those wishing to start a career as a paralegal are encouraged to graduate from a quality paralegal studies program.
Professional Paralegal Associations
Capital District Paralegal Association (CDPA)
The Capital District Paralegal Association, Inc. (CDPA) was founded in 1993 as the Albany Legal Assistants Association, Inc. Its purpose is to promote communication among paralegals and to promote and improve their image as professionals with the legal community as well as the public. The Association was incorporated in 1995 as a not-for-profit corporation and in 2001 the Association changed its name to the Capital District Paralegal Association, Inc.
Empire State Alliance of Paralegal Associations
On January 30, 1988, five NYS paralegal associations met in Binghamton and formed the “Empire State Alliance of Paralegal Associations” (“ESAPA”). Associations in attendance were from Long Island, Manhattan, Buffalo, Binghamton and Rochester. The statewide alliance arose from the need to strengthen the paralegal profession in NYS through networking.
Southern Tier Paralegal Association (STPA)
The Southern Tier Paralegal Association (STPA) was formed in 1980 to promote professional development through continuing legal education and to enhance the recognition of the paralegal profession within the legal community.

The Western New York Paralegal Association, Inc. (WNYPA) is a voluntary, nonprofit association formed in 1976 to promote the professional development and continuing education of paralegals in the Western New York area. With the goals of the development of the profession and the establishment of a communication network for paralegals, we have now grown to well over two hundred members.

The West/Rock Paralegal Association is the local paralegal association for the lower Hudson Valley. We are affiliated with the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) and are members of the Empire State Alliance of Paralegal Associations.
