Is College Right for My Child?

Every mother and father wants their child to be happy, successful and enjoy a life better than the one we have experienced.  More often than not we preach to our children that they need to study hard, get good grades, go to a great college and have a fantastic career.

We have been told for decades that attending college and earning a degree guarantee of a better life.  The media regularly reports on various studies supporting this notion.  Educators and their unions continually demand more money to improve the quality of our education system and politicians eager to secure votes do their best to appear supportive of policies to improve our schools.

I am all for education and personal enlightenment.  But, why must we blindly accept the notion that attending a college or university is the best or only way to achieve these goals?  The idea that every child should go to college is incorrect and we are actually harming some of our children.

Our current American system of educating children leaves much to be desired.  The skills acquired by our young people upon graduation from high school equip them to do two things: flip burgers as the local fast food joint or attend college.

There are alternatives to college that merit consideration and we are doing our children a disservice when we refuse to examine these options.

It is not my desire to suggest that YOUR child should avoid going to college.  I cannot speak for your child as we all have individual circumstances that must be weighed and considered.  Nor is it my desire to criticize teachers or present some elaborate educational conspiracy to ruin the lives of our children.

I simply believe that an alternative viewpoint to the universal acceptance that college is the best and only course for our young people needs to be presented and analyzed.  My concern is that our society has robotically accepted and indoctrinated parents and students into believing that everybody should go to college.  And I think that is preposterously absurd.

I believe this is absurd for a multitude of reasons and we will delve into those much more deeply throughout this website.   On this page and others you will find links to various articles about different aspects of this debate.  And, the Ditch College Blog will provide on-going tidbits for discussion.
